Miyamoto began his oboe lessons at Toho Gakuen High School with Seizo Suzuki, and began his worldwide career at age 18 when he moved to Germany to study with Helmut Winchermann.
He played with the municipal symphony orchestra in Essen, the Frankfurt Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra and then the Cologne Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra; he was the first Japanese oboist to occupy the first chair in Europe. He continued to live there until 2000, when he returned to Japan. He has released several albums not only in classical music, but also in such pop fields as jazz and film music.
Miyamoto is a professor at the Tokyo College of Music. He announced his retirement as a professional oboist and gave his last concert at the end of March 2007, and now works as a conductor. His second daughter is also the famous violinist Emiri Miyamoto.
