Fred Locks, born Stafford Elliot in 1955 in Kingston, Jamaica, was raised in a musically enriched environment. Growing up in the heart of Kingston, he was exposed to the vibrant sounds of ska, rocksteady, and traditional Jamaican folk music. These early influences laid the groundwork for Locks’ future career in reggae.
As a teenager, Locks found himself drawn to the Rastafarian faith, which would profoundly shape both his music and his worldview. Inspired by the teachings of Marcus Garvey and the spiritual messages of Rastafari, Locks began to incorporate these themes into his music, setting himself apart as a socially conscious artist from the outset.
