Conductor Harry Christophers himself points out that his choir, The Sixteen, has very rarely recorded secular music; most of the group's recordings are devoted to Renaissance and Baroque sacred works. Here, Christophers turns not only to secular music but to 20th century pieces in an idiom the group has rarely essayed. So often, a move like this is the kiss of death, but here is the example that proves the rule. The program consists of part-songs mostly from the 20th century, with one earlier work, Arthur Sullivan's The Long Day Closes (a work all the later composers would have known). The songs themselves, with a few exceptions, are not familiar, although many of the texts are. The idiom is a somewhat restricted one, almost semi-popular, but the texts are handled with great skill. Consider Imogen Holst's sextet of songs on poems by Keats, especially the opening "Welcome Joy and Welcome Sorrow." What is impressive is that Christophers remakes the sound of The Sixteen, adding a layer of fetching sentimentality to the group's usual precise polyphony. This is not at all easy to do with a group of singers who have mastered a certain style through long drills. One could certainly just listen to this album as an enjoyable introduction to an underrated repertory, but it is also quite admirable as a piece of choral art.
