Jean Martinon made a small series of brilliant recordings during his tenure in Chicago. His last years were spent doing a rather serious survey of the 19th and early 20th century French repertory for EMI. Sandwiched in were a few almost unnoticed, but generally very fine recordings for Erato. His recordings of the Saint-Saëns and Franck Symphonies have always been among my favorites, despite their good, but not quite outstanding recorded sound.
