Artist: Baiba Skride She is currently the most exciting violinist the music world has to offer; the young Baiba Skride from Riga; an earthy, thoroughbred musician who could seriously challenge the much-admired violin nymph Hilary Hahn for the rank. They both have one thing in common: an enormous self-confidence, because the repertoire that Baiba has chosen for her debut CD is really not for the modest. There is Johann Sebastian Bach's D minor Partita with the famous Chaconne, this miracle of music that can drive some people mad to learn. There is the devilishly difficult Sonata by Bela Bartok, which he composed on Yehudi Menuhin's commission. And finally Eugène Ysaye's Sonata No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27. Sure: style, historical accuracy and musical objectivity are beautiful things, but perhaps not quite the right thing for Baiba's Latvian-romantic soul. But Bach also offers plenty of room for emotion, for fire and passion, and Baiba Skride is full of it. She approaches the work with a wonderfully warm, opulent tone and violinistic bravura, conjuring up what Johannes Brahms called "a world of the deepest and most powerful feelings." Eugène Ysaye's sonata, composed in the spirit of Bach, fits in perfectly with this. And Bartok? He succeeds, as you would expect from a full-blooded musician, with fury and technical brilliance.
