Lars Gullin brought Swedish jazz to the world.
When Swedish jazz in the 1950s gained international attention, the spotlight fell mostly on the baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin. First as a member of Arne Domnéru's orchestra, then under his own name.
The native of Gotland Gullin, born in 1928, was for a long period one of Europe's foremost jazz musicians and he has few successors in terms of status and respect.
The result when all parts of his artistry worked together was unique. Gullin knew all the prevailing stylistic elements of jazz, but he combined this with quotes from national romantic music and Nordic music
folk music into something all its own.
The ballad "Danny's Dream", named after Gullin's son, became a bestseller and something of Gullin's signature, at the same time a symbol of the entire lyrical Swedish fifties jazz.
Over time, an increasingly darker streak was noticed in Gullin's music. His music became, if you like, "harder". But he also achieved great impact after Swedish jazz had passed its absolute zenith. Gullin's last major work, the suite "Aeros Aromatic Atomica", which appeared in 1976 - the same year he passed away - was another triumph for him and for orchestral jazz.
