"Piatigorsky's playing had an aristocratic, rather aloof severity that was ideal for certain of the Walton Concerto's elusive moods, but Tortelier's warmer, more impulsive lyricism makes it easier to understand Walton's at one time perplexing preference for this above his other concertos. It can seem the most private of the three, and the enigmatically brooding coda seems to confirm this, but Tortelier's emphasis on its deep but reticent emotion makes it more direct than it once seemed. It is still an under-played piece, but his performance is an eloquent plea for its revaluation...the orchestral playing is very accomplished (the solo horn player is not named, but deserves to have been) and the recording is beautifully transparent.
