Marin Marais (1656-1728) has left us with a vast heritage of compositions for the viol. His main oeuvre consists of 600 works contained in Five Books which he started publishing from 1686 until the year 1725. Only one gamba player has successfully recorded this mammoth production. Jean-Louis Charbonnier undertook to record all these compositions in 1992 and completed his project in September 2000. Jordi Savall who did so much to promote the discovery of the music of Marin Marais has recorded only selected pieces from the Five Books, from 1975 through 1992. Those recordings have been reissued by the Alia Vox label in 2010. This First Book, recorded by François Joubert-Caillet and his colleagues from the ensemble L’Achéron, was extremely well received in France. The magazines Diapason and Classica awarded top marks to the recording pn 4 CDs (Diapason d’Or and CHOC).
