Ülo Krigul studied in Tallinn and Vienna and wrote music in a wide range of genres. The three works on this disc—"And the Sea Rose," "Aga Vaata Aina Jüles" ("But Always Look Up"), and "Liquid Turns"—were completed in 2019–2020, when Krigul was the composer-in-residence of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Connected by a common concept and reworking of the musical material, these three form a triptych, preceded here by "Vesi Ise" ("There Is Water") from 2015. The latter is the first work Krigul wrote for the choir and its conductor, Kaspars Putniņš, and incorporates ideas that carried over into their later collaborations. To sum up the program: the composer took text and music from two previous works, and random phrases interact and emerge as a new whole. Krigul chose texts from the New Testament, the writings of the philosopher Uku Masinga and the sound poetry of Ilmar Laaban.
