On the occasion of the 90th birthday of Bernard Haitink on 4 March 2019, Decca presents the complete cycle of symphonies by Gustav Mahler on a total of 12 CDs and a Blu-ray Audio Disc. The recordings were made between 1962 and 1971 in the famous Concertgebouw Amsterdam and were for this Audiophile Edition remastered from the original sources in the 24bit 96kHz process. The symphony cycle is supplemented by Mahler's orchestral songs, among others with Jessye Norman, Janet Baker and Hermann Prey, as well as on the Bluray by an additional later recording of Mahler's First Symphony, which is particularly suitable for interpretation comparison. Under Bernard Haitink, the Concertgebouw secured its reputation as one of the great Mahler orchestras in the world.
The long-standing partnership between conductor and orchestra in conjunction with the acoustically outstanding recording location and an excellent team of technicians of the then Philips label left a detailed, balanced and in their depth impressive recording.
Haitink characterized Mahler's works as follows: "Mahler himself said: 'The most important things lie beyond the notes' ... Interpretation is something that can not be written down, either one has it in the blood or not".
