At the end of his life, Horowitz had chosen to record for Deutsche Grammophon. The Hamburg label reissues all of its recordings, 6 CDs, commemorating the centenary of the birth of the pianist. Age had not altered the technical abilities of this piano genius; we recognize immediately in the pieces of German romanticism as in the Russian cycles the violence of the song and the rhythm that are born under his fingers. In each piece, Horowitz seems to tell us a story. The melody is tense as an aria of opera, made fluid by the sometimes orchestral accompaniment of the left hand. The depth of the metal bass, percussive, reinforces the dramatic power and the lightning intensity of the smallest page. A basic set for any disco of piano lovers.
