"What A Wonderful World Of Jazz Singing" one would like to exclaim about the content of this gathering of 21 top jazz singers and their recordings made between 1946 and 1962. A musical spectrum spreads out that comes across as dazzling and multi-layered as these singing personalities, who come from all sources of the infamous American melting pot and have driven their roots deep into all ingredients of American popular music: into the blues of the Mississippi and the metropolises, the swing of the Jazz Age and the black ghettos and the New York ballrooms, the effervescent bebop and the cool jazz of the Californian West Coast.
Louis Armstrong, the greatest jazz star of all time, opens with his rare tribute to Fats Waller, another great singer, pianist and composer.
Count Basie singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams are included with rare albums, while Basie recorded a perfect masterpiece with singer Billy Eckstine, in whose own big band all the greats of bebop had found a first home in the 1940s. Jimmy Witherspoon and Al Smith proclaim full of joie de vivre and fervent about the healing powers of the blues. With the masters of "vocalese" King Pleasure and Eddie Jeffferson, we meet the idols of the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and Andy and the Bey Sisters. Bey, born in 1939, is unfortunately the only living singer of these recordings and is also considered by connoisseurs to be the greatest in his field in the 21st century. With Chet Baker, Mark Murphy, Mose Allison and Jackie Paris, individualists are represented who can be located between Cool and Sophisticated Blues. Black hipsters like Slim Gaillard and Babs Gonzales lead to Oscar Brown Jr., who in the early 1960s formulated a completely new self-confidence with his songs from the middle of the ghetto and the everyday life of the African-American community and brought it into jazz lyrics. He thus became a role model for later generations such as those of Gil Scott-Heron, Terry Callier and many others.
For those who miss one or two favorite singers, there are effortlessly twenty more master singers from this period just begging for a second go-round.
