After the dramatic opening fanfare Ozawa lets the principal theme of the opening movement steal in subtly, the fluid woodwind and echoing strings creating a very gentle melancholy... [W]hen the engaging secondary material arrives Ozawa and the Berliners find much delicacy and the rocking motive on the violins sings sweetly. The first big climax of the movement with the thrusting horns is bold and resplendent...and the final denouement (this is one of Tchaikovsky's most effective codas), though not without adrenalin, is essentially expansive. The oboe solo of the Andantino is restrained and songful and very beautifully played... The pizzicato Scherzo...is full of energy and crisply articulated. It has an exhilarating zest...
