It's only dedicated followers of Louis Armstrong who've realized that Satchmo doesn't have a digital-era, career-spanning box set, nothing quite like Satchmo: Ambassador of Jazz. This one does it, both in a four-disc set and a massive ten-disc incarnation that presents excellent material from all periods of his life, from early landmarks like "West End Blues" to Decca-era big-band pop ("A Kiss to Build a Dream On"), right alongside late-period bucolia such as "We Have All the Time in the World" and "Hello, Dolly." It spends plenty of time focusing on his live work of the '40s and '50s, often with his All-Stars in tow, and devotes a good half-hour to his duets with Ella Fitzgerald. Some fans will already own all of this (and more), but Satchmo is a comprehensive place to find several hours of material proving that Armstrong was a modern giant.
