Artist: The Juilliard String Quartet After the box containing the recordings for Epic (1956-1966), here is the Juilliard String Quartet in its records made for RCA Victor between May 1957 and October 1960. Faithful to Columbia since their beginnings, the Juilliards then went to see RCA, which was beginning to develop its stereo catalog. However, despite the musical quality of the discs Mozart and Haydn (in mono), Berg and Webern, Carter and William Schuman, Dvorák and Wolf and the Beethovens (op. 18 nos 2, 59 nos 2, 95, 131, 132, 135) that RCA Victor's artistic team managed to make a nest for itself at the Juilliards, missing out on the design of a sound identity, a fact evidenced by the chasm between the sublime Beethoven (op. 18 and 59) captured by John Pfeiffer at Webster Hall in New York and the sonic abrasiveness of other Beethoven opuses recorded at RCA Studio B by Allan Ballantine. Historically important set, but to hear here the Dvorák and the three Beethovens of 1960, the Juilliards did well to return to Columbia.
