Traversing the eleven hours of Haydn’s piano sonatas proved to be fascinating in many ways. Beginning with rococo fluff, and progressing through the years, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the development of a style that influenced generations of composers, from Mozart and Beethoven and on to their followers and successors. In this repertoire, the superb pianist Jenö Jandó is like a fish in water—so natural and musical is his playing. This is augmented by the excellent Steinway piano he plays, and the church acoustics where the recordings took place.
