ALTUS 20th Anniversary Edition, 18 years in the planning! The Bruckner cycle of Hiroshi Wakasugi and the NHK Symphony Orchestra is now available in a boxed set of the complete works, with the exception of Nos. 7 and 3 being released on CD for the first time! The legendary performances are finally revealed in their entirety! The year 2020 marks the 85th anniversary of the birth of conductor Hiroshi Wakasugi, who sadly passed away in 2009, and the legendary Bruckner Cycle with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, which has been long awaited on CD, will be released in a box set. All but two of the recordings are being released on CD for the first time. The Bruckner Cycle was held over three seasons and nine performances from 1996, the 100th anniversary of Bruckner's death and the 10th anniversary of the opening of Suntory Hall (the NHK Symphony Orchestra was also celebrating its 70th anniversary), through 1998. Entitled "Two Centuries of Catholicism," the ambitious program combining a Bruckner symphony and a Messiaen work in each performance attracted a great deal of attention. All rehearsals were held at Suntory Hall, so the interpretation of Bruckner's symphonies deepened with each rehearsal, and the audience became more accustomed to the program. The third season's three pieces were performed to a wonderful degree of perfection, with the conductor, orchestra, and audience playing Bruckner in unison.At the time, the BMG label was planning to record the complete Bruckner concertos live, but unfortunately, only the first and second performances (Nos. 7 and 3) were released on CD, and they are now difficult to obtain. Unfortunately, only the first and second performances (No. 7 and No. 3) are available on CD, and they are now hard to find. The ALTUS label has carefully mastered the recordings from NHK, which is on a different line from the BMG label recordings. In addition to the pleasure of being able to listen to the entire album for the first time, the major point is that the two previously released songs can also be enjoyed in a new sound. The commentary includes writings by Tetsuya Isseki of Tokyo Concerts, Keiko Takii, a musicologist, and Takuo Ikeda, a music journalist, who were close to Wakasugi during his lifetime. All of them are valuable contributions that allow us to get a closer look at Wakasugi's personality. In addition, the musicologist and critic Daisuke Hirose provides commentary on the music, including differences in editions, and Kenjiro Sakairi provides commentary on the choice of edition and performance from a conductor's point of view. All have been newly written for this set, and the gorgeous contents will give you a deeper appreciation of this monumental performance. Two pieces, No. 3 and No. 8, are performed in opposing arrangements.
