Jazz keyboard player whose light, hook-laden pop instrumentals often hit the charts during the 1970s and '80s. Bob James is a prolific, best-selling, Grammy-winning composer, arranger, producer, and pianist. Alongside Grover Washington, Jr., he is among the creators of smooth and contemporary jazz, seamlessly gathering genres from bop to pop, classical, and R&B. He composes memorable, elegant melodies with rich harmonies and multiple sonic and production textures, often anchored by lithe, funky grooves. His four numerically titled albums for CTI during the mid-'70s successfully melded jazz, pop, and classical styles with sophisticated arrangements and funky grooves, and have been sampled extensively. James has also composed for film and television. "Angela," from the chart-topping Touchdown in 1978, was the iconic theme for the hit television show Taxi. James has also composed and arranged for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In addition to jazz, he issued three successful classical titles in the '80s. His jazz masterwork, Grand Piano Canyon, appeared in 1990; after its release, he co-founded jazz supergroup Fourplay. James' 21st century achievements include the concert offering Angels of Shanghai, showcasing compositions played by Fourplay, a quintet of Chinese conservatory students playing traditional folk instruments, and a DJ. In 2013, he released Alone: Kaleidoscope by Solo Piano, and in 2015, The New Cool, a duet with bassist Nathan East. In 2020, he cut On Vacation in France with trumpeter/vocalist Till Brönner. In 2023, he released Jazz Hands, the most eclectic album in his career.
