Seven discs, 168 items: and this is only Vol 1. Deller is most widely known and commonly remembered on records for the dozen or so songs by Dowland, Purcell and others brought out by HMV shortly after the war. They were unique in kind then and are still very special today after half a century and more in which the countertenor voice has become regular musical fare. But in 1950 he founded the Deller Consort, and the records made, whether in ensemble or as soloist with that group, are his richest legacy. They were issued first by the American company Vanguard and later by Harmonia Mundi.
