Though he grew up as a drummer and was raised on rock & roll, Coco Montoya became an outstanding blues guitarist after stints in the bands of Albert Collins and John Mayall. Over a five-decade-plus career he has become an influential, charting, award-winning blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His biting tone melds raucous yet melodic Chicago blues and vintage R&B with soulful vocals. He possesses a unique, left-handed playing style that brings funky Latin rhythms, roots rock, and jazz into electric blues. His Silvertone/Blind Pig debut solo effort, Gotta Mind to Travel from 1994, won a W.C. Handy award for "Best New Artist." His sophomore outing, Ya Think I'd Know Better, landed inside the Top Ten on the blues charts -- setting the bar for the success of his entire catalog. After signing with Alligator Records in 2000, two consecutive albums -- Can't Look Back and Dirty Deal -- landed in the Top Five. His popularity continues: his 2017 date, Hard Truth, peaked at number five. Unlike most bluesmen, Montoya often goes years between releases but tours regularly.
