Beethoven's nine symphonies are among the fundamental building blocks in the history of Western music. Under the direction of Franz Konwitschny, they were an early participant in Eterna's recording and publishing program, where recordings of the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies with the Gewandhaus Orchestra appeared on separate shellac discs each. This stereo edition of the complete cycle was made in co-production with Philips at the Bethanienkirche in Leipzig during three extensive recording sessions between 1959 and 1961. Franz Konwitschny (1901-1962), a conductor known for his down-to-earth approach to music-making, was appointed Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus in 1949. Born in North Moravia, he studied for two years in Brno and subsequently at the Leipzig Institute, which Mendelssohn had founded in 1843. During this period (1923-25), he assimilated the city's musical traditions with an open and alert mind. By the time he began studying in Leipzig, his violin and viola skills had reached such a high level that Furtwängler selected him as a substitute for Gewandhaus concerts. Just as in a live concert, he embraced the refinement and precision of orchestral playing. With his authoritative, fluid, and impulsive, yet relatively economical gestures, Konwitschny was able to energize and respond to the orchestra. When interruptions or corrections became necessary, his impeccable sense of tempo allowed him to resume playing at precisely the same tempo as before, thus maintaining a sense of overall coherence. The recordings shown here are important testaments to the Beethoven tradition at the Gewandhaus and to German recording history.
