Greene's oratorio was written 14 years before Handel's celebrated masterpiece of the same name. Based on the 11th chapter of the Book of Judges, it tells the story of a fearless Israelite warrior, called from exile to fight for his people, who promises to sacrifice the first person he meets upon his return home in exchange for victory in battle. Unfortunately, the first person he meets is his own daughter.
He was a man not only of great valor but also, as it later turns out—thanks to an impulsive and fateful promise—of deep honor, destined to become a worthy ruler.
Time has arguably not been kind to the English composer Maurice Greene. By 1730, he was one of England's most distinguished musicians: organist of St. Paul's Cathedral, organist and composer of the Chapel Royal, and professor of music at Cambridge University. When he was appointed Master of the King's Music in 1735, he held every significant position in the kingdom. Of course, Handel's overwhelming presence in London at the time undoubtedly played a significant role in Greene's relative obscurity. His second attempt at an oratorio, Jephthah, in 1737, marks the Englishman's first successful venture into the genre.
Filled with engagingly varied arias and choruses, powerfully emotional recitatives with accompaniment, and energetic orchestral sections, this is a captivating work.
Christian Kernin directs the Early Opera Company with a dazzling cast of soloists: Andrew Staples sings the role of Jephthah, joined by Mary Bevan, Michael Mofidian, and Jeremy Budd.
Peter Lynan's 1996 edition is used.
