Essential Masses, Vol. 1 and 2 is a comprehensive compilation from the Naxos label, released since June 28, 1993. It is one of the largest digital collections of sacred music, comprising over 500 tracks and spanning approximately two days.
The album brings together recordings by various artists from the Naxos catalog, covering a vast period of musical history—from Gregorian chant to classical
and romantic masses.
A distinctive feature of the series is the use of recordings by young but highly professional ensembles (such as the Oxford Camerata), allowing Naxos to make high-quality music
accessible to a wide audience.
The digital edition of Essential Masses, Vol. 1 consists of 23 virtual discs, which correspond almost exactly to the 23 original CDs from the Naxos catalog. Each CD (with rare exceptions) is dedicated to a specific composer. It should be noted that this is not the first version of this thematic collection. In this updated version (completed in 2005), some older recordings from the late 1980s and early 1990s have been replaced with more current abridged versions of the works, and the discs themselves are grouped differently.
What's the secret behind the "1993" date?
The date 1993 often appears in digital platform metadata, as that's when the series' trademark was registered and the first physical collections were released.
However, the actual release of the complete 23-disc digital box set in the form presented here occurred later. Naxos often dates its anthologies by the year the project began. In fact, this set is a dynamic compilation, completed from recordings in 2005.
After that, Naxos began compiling the second 19-disc volume.
