This is indeed a fine disc. The performances of all three works are outstanding and the superbly balanced recording takes the heftiest tuttis without any sense of strain. The Poulenc receives the best performance on disc I have ever heard; Dame Gillian delivers an account of the demanding solo part which admirably combines virtuosity with sensitivity, and there are moments which are so exciting they make one catch one's breath. David Hill is a fine accompanist, following his soloist like a cat, and the ECO's playing is world-class. Pierre Petit's (1922-2000) Concertino (with full orchestra, 1958) is a real find – at 21 minutes, this extensive three-movement work is longer than many concertos – and is an imaginative piece of distinction. The performance could hardly be bettered and comes as a revealing and timely memorial to a worthwhile composer (Petit, of whose music too little is known, was also a noted music critic for Le Figaro).Samuel Barber's Toccata festiva was first recorded by E. Power Biggs for CBS, and a new recording – especially one as fine as this – is most welcome. Having been written to inaugurate a new organ at the Philadelphia Academy of Music, the work is not a loud romp throughout, as the title might suggest, but is, in almost all respects, a one-movement Organ Concerto (16'20") containing a wide variety of moods within a relatively constant pulse. It is a magnificent score, movingly and thrillingly performed here – and, as in Petit's Concertino, Dame Gillian is excellently accompanied by Raymond Leppard. The recording, made in St Augustine's Chapel at Tonbridge School, is demonstration-worthy.
