Artist: Alison Balsom Bach composed no dedicated chamber pieces for the trumpet (if we discount Brandeburg Concerto No. 2), yet his great choral works contain the most varied and demanding repertoire for the instrument before the 19th century. Much of this virtuoso music is distinctly chamber-like in the way it partners the voice, with an especially surprising lyricism in cantata arias. Alison Balsom harnesses this guiding principle in her exploration of Bach's chamber repositories for all kinds of instruments and voice-types. That none of the pieces here was originally conceived for the trumpet would not have bothered Bach unduly; he was the master adaptor who always promoted musical imagination and flair above debilitating dogma and restrictive thinking. With the modern instrument superseding the valveless baroque instrument (where lip control in the upper tessitura defined its melodic capability) into a fully chromatic apparatus, Alison Balsom challenges historical circumstance and reinvents a whole new world of Bach chamber music for the trumpet.
